As 2015 draws to a close, Hallyu star Lee Min Ho has enjoyed a banner year during which he met personal and professional success. Here are 10 top milestones that mark another fantastic year for the actor who rose to fame in Boys Over Flowers. BONUS: A brand new video message direct from Lee Min Ho is also included.
There are millions of Lee Min Ho fans out there. Before I begin the list, remember that these milestones are just what one fan (me!) has selected. You may agree, disagree, or have other ideas. Please share your thoughts in the comments section at the end of the article.
1. Gangnam Blues, the movie with Lee Min Ho's first lead role, premiered on January 12 in South Korea to great fanfare.
Promotional events surrounding the release of Gangnam Blues drew huge crowds vying for a view of the handsome actor. There was one unexpected attendee at the star-studded red carpet, and we would later learn that Suzy was invited by Lee Min Ho himself for a special reason.
Lee Min Ho coordinated travel plans to combine his Paris photoshoot with meeting his girlfriend Suzy in London. Although the secret dating relationship was uncovered by the paparazzi, fans generally like the starry match despite the surprise, and Lee Min Ho's popularity even went up.
3. He became the new face of Korean tourism.
Lee Min Ho was the perfect choice for a new tourism campaign to attract international visitors to South Korea. His tourism video received over 22 million views in only 2 months after release, and it has reached over 37 million views to date.
4. He is the Honorary Ambassador for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
Lee Min Ho loves sports and would have become an athlete if he hadn't entered acting. So it is to his honor and great delight that he was chosen as the Honorary Ambassador in the upcoming Winter Olympics to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
6. His star power energizes sales for his endorsed brands.
An example of his endorsement success is Samsonite Red, which announced a 40% sales increase after it signed up Lee Min Ho. No wonder many brands, not just those from Korea but also from other Asian countries, come calling. He recently added Indonesia's Luwak White Koffie to his ever-expanding portfolio.
7. Lee Min Ho was selected by Italian chocolatier Ferrero Rocher to be its new spokesperson.
Global brands have noticed Lee Min Ho's attraction, and Ferrero Rocher wants his help to enhance its premium image and expand its market in Asia. His romantic commercials for the Italian chocolates have received huge attention, and his visit to the grand opening at Ferrero's fleet store in Taipei, Taiwan, led to a dramatic sales increase as fans competed in a drawing using purchase receipts.
8. He started filming for the Bounty Hunters movie in September.
His new Bounty Hunters movie is expected to reach a large international audience when it is released in early 2016. The new movie is a Chinese-Korean collaboration which also stars Tiffany Tang and Wallace Chung. (That's him and Wallace in a cute photo from the press conference.)
9. He received many awards for his extreme popularity and for his performance in Gangnam Blues.
To name a few here: Lee Min Ho received Best New Star award at the Grand Bell Awards, the Popularity award at the 36th Blue Dragon Film Awards and at the 51st Baeksang Arts Awards. In China, where Lee Min Ho has more than 28 million followers to his Weibo social media account, he was even voted as the top Nanshen (Asian male god), edging out Hong Kong actor Wallace Chung, his co-star in Bounty Hunters.
9. He released a new single album, The Day.
The Day rose to #2 on Japan's Orion chart within 2 days of its release on November 30. Its popularity has continue to rise now that it has been released to worldwide listeners.
10. His contribution to Korean tourism has been recognized with high honors.
For his important role in Korean tourism, Lee Min Ho stood next to South Korean President Park Geun Hye at the Visit Korea Years proclamation ceremony on November 6. He and AOA's Seolhyunwere also named Honorary Ambassadors for Visit Korea Years.
There's more! When the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently awarded the Star of Korean Tourism award, the award naturally went to Lee Min Ho for his outstanding contribution to Korean tourism in 2015.
